Official Launch of the Project "Environmental Empowerment for Grassroots and Non-State Actors in Thailand"

EU-KAS-ENLAW Project

The Delegation of the European Union to Thailand financially joins hands with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in supporting ENLAWTHAI Foundation to disseminate knowledge about environmental justice to Thai grassroots.

With effect from 1st of April 2015, a three year project will be implemented in Northern, Eastern and Southern regions of Thailand, covering the following 18 provinces: Chiang Mai, Mae Hon Song, Tak, Lampang, Lamphun, Nan, Phayao, Chiang Rai, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Prachin Buri, Rayong, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chumphon, Krabi, Trang, Satun and Songkhla.

The project will include mobile legal clinic, free lawyer service, community legal empowerment training, capacity training programs for junior lawyers and paralegals which focus on increasing awareness and participation of grassroots communities in exercising community rights in natural resource management through many educational tools that will also enhance grassroots comprehension of the state’s complicated legal and administrative proceedings.

The project expects to achieve the following results:

• Successful collaboration between the state, civil society organizations and local communities engaged in natural resource management that respects the rule of law.

• Increased state compliance and recognition of community rights by supporting exchange platforms.

• Increased capacity and efficiency of local civil society organization in providing legal services on complexity of environmental regulations, assessment tools, and national and international legal instruments to grassroots communities.

The project was officially launched on 7 May 2015 at 09:00 hrs, at the Mercure Bangkok Siam Hotel and was attended by 50 participants from public and private sectors, civil society organizations in legal sphere as well as involved key stakeholders, the EU, project staff and international project management experts from Germany.
