Im Februar vergangenen Jahres hatte der australische Premier Malcolm Turnbull gemeinsam mit der Premierministerin von New South Wales, Gladys Berejiklian, für März 2018 einen Australien-ASEAN-Sondergipfel in Sydney angekündigt. Sondergipfel sind für die südostasiatische Staatengemeinschaft und ihre zehn Dialogpartner (Australien, Kanada, China, die EU, Indien, Japan, Neuseeland, Russland, Südkorea und die USA) nichts Neues; dieses Gipfeltreffen vom 17. und 18. März in Sydney war allerdings das erste Treffen der Staats- und Regierungschefs der ASEAN-Länder dieser Art in Australien.

Join us in a little time travel as we take a look back on the successful opening year that was 2017 for us here at the KAS Australia & the Pacific office, with the electronic release of our first Annual Report. It's been an adventure, but a fulfilling year of activities & political dialogue! Neuseeland hat gewählt

National Party ist stärkste Kraft, doch New Zealand First wird zum Königsmacher

Noch bis vor wenigen Tagen sah es nach einem Überraschungssieg für die oppositionelle Labour Partei aus. Doch der trat nicht ein: Die konservative National Party wurde bei den Parlamentswahlen am 23. September mit 46 Prozent stärkste Kraft und liegt um zehn Prozent deutlich vor der Labour Party, kann aber mit diesem Ergebnis nicht alleine regieren. Bill English kündigte noch am Wahlabend an, in Koalitionsgespräche mit der populistischen New Zealand First zu treten. Theoretisch – jedoch eher unwahrscheinlich - wäre auch eine Koalition von Labour Party, den Grünen und New Zealand First möglich.

In Neuseeland wird am 23. September ein neues Parlament gewählt. Die Regierungspartei unter Bill English galt lange Zeit als der klare Favorit und von Wahlkampf im eigentlichen Sinne konnte nicht die Rede sein. Mit dem überraschenden Wechsel an der Spitze der Oppositionspartei Labour nahm der Wahlkampf plötzlich an Fahrt auf.

Konrad Adenauer Lecture Series

Australia & Pacific

The Konrad Adenauer Lecture Series is focused on enhancing understanding of Germany and Europe in Australia and the wider region. Since the inaugural Konrad Adenauer Lecture took place in November 2017 it has presented a variety of high ranking international speakers. The establishment of the prestigious annual Konrad Adenauer Lecture was the culmination of an ongoing collaboration between the ANU Centre for European Studies (ANUCES) and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS). Over a number of years ANUCES and KAS have worked to bring together researchers and policymakers on issues of critical importance in both Europe and Australia. Their collaborative events and publications have promoted dialogue among scholars and practitioners to address common problems and identify shared interests. ANUCES and KAS formalised their partnership in the form of their commitment to an annual, high-profile lecture series and subsequent papers.
