The National Party of New Zealand is in turmoil. Todd Muller, its new (now former) party leader has resigned. The resignation came just 53 days after his rise to this position (22 May) and only 67 days before the elections (19 September), if one were to disregard overseas voting (as of 2 September) and advance voting (as of 5 September) (see Timeline).

Todd Muller explained that the role had taken a heavy toll on him and his family, that the situation had become untenable from a health perspective, and that he was not the best person to be the leader.
