As the longest serving member of the European Parliament (EP) for almost 40 years, Elmar Brok is widely credited for his significant contributions to EU foreign policy (Head of European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs for 13 years) and constitutional matters. Following his retirement from Parliament in June this year, Mr Brok was appointed Special Adviser to the outgoing EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on relations with Ukraine.

KAS Regional Programme Australia and the Pacific (KAS Australia) has organised in cooperation with the European Centre for Energy and Resources Security (EUCERS) (to be renamed into European Centre for Climate and Energy Security) its 2nd Energy Policy Dialogue. The Programme is scheduled to take place from 7 to 11 October 2019 in New Zealand and Australia. The aim of the Dialogue is to bring together policy makers, experts and business representatives from Australia, Germany and New Zealand to discuss current energy policy issues and possible solutions.

This was the topic of the first discussion of our 3rd Europe-Australia cybersecurity dialogue which we have adapted to a ‘Virtual Discussion Series in Three Parts’, in collaboration with experts from the Stiftung Neue Verantwortung (SNV) in Berlin. Under the heading of ‘Cybersecurity in Crisis Times - A Way Forward for Europe and Australia’, the three sessions centred around multilateral and multi-stakeholder engagement and the potential for increasing cooperation as the COVID-19 pandemic has widened the attack surface for cyber operations.

KAS Australia and the Pacific was pleased to welcome Dr Klaus Schueler, State Secretary (ret’d) and former Federal Managing Director of the CDU, for a political dialogue program with Australian and New Zealand politicians, political party and industry representatives, academics and think tank experts. Dr Schueler, who is now the Board of Management’s representative for national and international politics at LANXESS and a member of the Board of Trustees at the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation was accompanied by Dr Peter Hefele, Director Team Asia and the Pacific, KAS Berlin.
