Dezember 2017 zusammen mit Heinz-Christian Strache (FPÖ) das Regierungsprogramm vorstellte, das die beiden Parteien knapp zwei Monate ausverhandelt hatten.

On 29th and 30th of November 2017 the 5th AU-EU Summit took place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. 16 of the 28 EU Member States attended the summit, amongst them the German Chancellor Angela Merkel und French President Emmanuel Macron. For both countries Africa stands high on the political agenda, and the ad hoc initiative undertaken at the summit to address the modern slave trade in Libya highlights the joint concern but also the renewed Franco-German partner- and leadership.

Der Europäische Ratsgipfel am 19. und 20. Oktober 2017 fand unter dem Eindruck vieler internationaler Krisen statt. Die steigenden Spannungen zwischen den USA und Nordkorea, die ambivalenten Äußerungen des US-Präsidenten zum Iran-Atomabkommen, nicht zuletzt die Ereignisse in Spanien sowie der Brexit sorgten für Abstimmungsbedarf zwischen den europäischen Staats- und Regierungschefs. Obwohl arm an konkreten Ergebnissen, bot der Gipfel die Gelegenheit, sich über eine gemeinsame Richtung abzustimmen.

Sebastian Kurz macht die Mitte stark

Die ÖVP unter ihrem neuen Vorsitzenden Sebastian Kurz holte bei den vorgezogenen Wahlen zum Nationalrat die meisten Stimmen. Die SPÖ blieb stabil und lag am Ende knapp vor der rechtspopulistischen FPÖ, welche wie bereits in den vorherigen Wahlen Stimmen hinzugewann. Für die Regierungsbeteiligung entscheidend wird nun, ob die rechtsgerichtete FPÖ bereit sein wird, den pro-europäischen Kurs der ÖVP in einer Regierung mitzutragen.

In cooperation with the Representation of the State Hessen tothe European Union, the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) organized a discussion on "Helmut Kohl, former German Chancellor and honorary citizens of the EU - his work and his legacy for the united Europe". As honorary guest and long-time companion, Dr. Theo Waigel, former Minister of Finance, gave an impulse.

There were important, but not unexpected, decisions on the topics of security and migration that were most recently discussed. The European Council called on the Internet industry to work more strongly against extremist content, agreed on common military structures and called for the creation of a complete list of safe third countries. Further topics were: international, fixing the criteria and the process for the change of location of two European agencies, the topic of economics, and the future issue of a digital Europe.

For many observers, the kingdom is de facto divided into the Dutch-speaking, economically strong Flanders in the north and the French-speaking, economically rather weak Wallonia in the south. In addition, there is a small German-speaking minority in the east of the country.
