Sebastian Kurz macht die Mitte stark

Die ÖVP unter ihrem neuen Vorsitzenden Sebastian Kurz holte bei den vorgezogenen Wahlen zum Nationalrat die meisten Stimmen. Die SPÖ blieb stabil und lag am Ende knapp vor der rechtspopulistischen FPÖ, welche wie bereits in den vorherigen Wahlen Stimmen hinzugewann. Für die Regierungsbeteiligung entscheidend wird nun, ob die rechtsgerichtete FPÖ bereit sein wird, den pro-europäischen Kurs der ÖVP in einer Regierung mitzutragen.

As honorary guest and long-time companion, Dr. Theo Waigel, former Minister of Finance, gave an impulse.

There were important, but not unexpected, decisions on the topics of security and migration that were most recently discussed. The European Council called on the Internet industry to work more strongly against extremist content, agreed on common military structures and called for the creation of a complete list of safe third countries. Further topics were: international, fixing the criteria and the process for the change of location of two European agencies, the topic of economics, and the future issue of a digital Europe.

Zum 60. Jubiläum der Römischen Verträge fand in der italienischen Hauptstadt ein Festakt auf dem Kapitol im Palazzo die Conservatori statt, mit dem der Gründungsakt der Europäischen Gemeinschaft gefeiert wurde. Zudem unterzeichneten die Staats- und Regierungschefs der 27 EU-Mitgliedstaaten (ohne Großbritannien) eine gemeinsame Erklärung, die vier Ziele für die nächsten zehn Jahre festlegte. Die Union der Europäischen Föderalisten organisierte im Stadtzentrum darüber hinaus einen Marsch für Europa, an welchem auch mehrere Mitglieder des Europäischen Parlaments teilnahmen.

Implikationen des „Brexits“

Mit der gestrigen Übergabe des Austrittbriefes wurde dem Entschluss der Mehrheit der britischen Bürger gemäß dem Referendum vom 23. Juni 2016 Folge geleistet: Der Austritt Großbritanniens aus der Europäischen Union wurde eingeleitet. Nun beschäftigt ganz Europa die Frage, wie genau zunächst der Austritt aus der Europäischen Union sowie im Nachhinein die Beziehungen mit Großbritannien gestaltet werden. Es kommt vor allem die Frage nach der Form des Austritts und nach resultierenden Konsequenzen, besonders aus juristischer, politischer und wirtschaftlicher Perspektive, auf.

Klares pro-europäisches Resultat

Am 15. März 2017 wurde in den Niederlanden das Parlament, die Tweede Kamer, gewählt. Somit stand nicht nur Den Haag, sondern letztlich auch Europa vor der ersten Bewährungsprobe im „Superwahljahr“ 2017. Der wochenlang in Führung gelegene Geert Wilders und seine rechtsnationale PVV wurden nicht stärkste Kraft im Parlament. Dennoch gewannen sie leicht an Stimmen hinzu. Die große Fragmentierung des Parlaments deutet derzeit auf eine mindestens vier Parteien umfassende Koalition hin. Die Koalitionsverhandlungen werden sich aller Voraussicht nach allerdings bis in den Sommer hinziehen.
