Dialogue in Tense Times
The EU and the Warsaw-Budapest Axis
"Pole and Hungarian, two brothers" are the opening words of a proverb from the Middle Ages that rhymes in both languages and is intended to express the deep bond between the two countries. In fact, Polish- Hungarian relations are characterized by many similarities and the first contacts can be dated back to the 10th century. Dynastic ties, decades of foreign rule and common resistance to communism have forged a friendship that is still unique in Eastern Europe, even if it is often romanticized. With their accession to NATO in 1999 and to the European Union five years later, Poland and Hungary ultimately joined existing economic and (security) political Western integration structures.
Workshop
fully bookedEurope in an increasingly challenging world
Online Workshop
The European Union finds itself in an increasingly complex global environment. With the Corona pandemic still dominating most state actions and the everyday life of its citizens, new regional and global powers are emerging with the intention to challenge the status quo and with the ambition to create a counterweight vis- á-vis the Western states and the rules-based international order. In the course of the next years, the EU will have to define its own position in a global context and put its internal procedures and mechanisms to the test to make sure that it can continue to act effectively and efficiently.
Event
fully bookedChanged political realities in Germany and the role of CDU/CSU as the opposition leader
Online Event
2021 was a significant year for German politics. After 16 years and four legislative terms, Chancellor Angela Merkel did not run again in the Federal Elections and left the political stage. What most experts rightfully describe as the “end of an era” came also with a new political landscape. Due to severe losses of CDU and CSU, other political parties were able to form a coalition and did so in December. Since then, Germany is governed by the first “Ampelkoalition” (consisting of Social Democrats, Liberals and Greens) on the Federal level led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Both EPP parties were left with no other option than to accept their role as leader of the opposition, in which they are joined by the far-left party Die Linke and the far-right AfD. While the new government agreed on an ambitious coalition agreement with a strong emphasize on the fight against climate change, economic recovery after the pandemic as well as modernization of the coun- try in general, CDU/CSU find themselves in a situation in which they last have been from 1998 to 2005.
