Objective
The role of religion in shaping modern democracies has become increasingly relevant in a global political context marked by identity politics and ideological polarization. While many European democracies have moved toward secular governance with limited religious influence, India continues to experience a dynamic interplay between religion and democratic politics.
This study will explore the comparative relevance of religion and other cleavages in shaping democratic systems in India and selected European countries. Particular attention will be paid to how conservative forces interact with religious identity in both settings. The study will also assess how religion affects party politics, voter behavior, and political discourse in these democracies.
The study will contribute to a better understanding of Indian democratic practices and serve to break down common stereotypes surrounding religion and politics in India. Furthermore, it may offer guidance for future delegations on symbolic and ideological factors that require cultural sensitivity.
