Both for the scholar and the practitioner, Operation Protective Edge was/is a textbook case asymmetric conflict. Its seven weeks of fighting offered an in vivo perspective of the four principal battlegrounds of such conflicts: the military, the media, the legal and the diplomatic ones. Moreover, it demonstrated that the haunting problem of the influence of war on the delicate fabric of democracy was and remained “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma”.

The following questions will be tackled during this roundtable: what is the purpose of the fighting, what does the decision-making process look like (decision-makers and their agendas)?, what is the influence of war on the relationship between majority and minority and what was/is the influence of the operation on Israel’s image in the world?

We believe that a better understanding of the above-mentioned problems, even if we will fall short of answering them, will contribute to a (more) peaceful coexistence between Israel and its neighbors and will strengthen democracy and the rule of law on both sides of the hill.
