Global Populism: A threat to a rule based global order - Foundation Office Cambodia
Lecture
Details
Prof Dr Klaus Segbers, Director of the Center for Global Politics at Freie Universität Berlin, will hold a public lecture on “Global Populism: A threat to a rule based global order” on 13th March 2017. Prof Segbers will present different kinds of populism covering the world, referring to the U.S. and Europe, which are often triggered by transnational trade, immigration and identity politics.
Background
Many people worldwide feel uprooted regarding the consequences of globalization. This uncertainty is intensified by the decreasing rule-bound international order, the shrinking power of nation states, the increasing inconsistency of politics and a lack of narratives in order to win and to include the population. Populists tend to use this situation to offer seemingly simple answers to complex issues which, amongst other things, led to Trump’s election victory and the Brexit. This public lecture aims to present roadmaps for understanding the phenomena of populism as well as to discuss possible solutions.
