by Juro Avgustinović

Dubrovnik Media Days 2025

Under the title “Generative AI: Transforming Journalism, Strategic Communication, and Education,” the international scientific conference “Dubrovnik Media Days” was held at the University of Dubrovnik. The event focused on how generative artificial intelligence is reshaping journalism, strategic communication and education — and on the ethical, social and political challenges emerging from these transformations.

Generative AI offers significant opportunities for innovation and access to information, but it also carries risks such as disinformation, loss of trust and copyright challenges. The conference brought together scholars, media professionals and policymakers to discuss the future of journalism, the economic sustainability of the media sector, and educational strategies for dealing with AI.

In general, participants agreed that technological developments require new ethical and regulatory frameworks, while at the same time offering opportunities to strengthen media literacy and public discourse. Following the conference, the Policy Lab “Information Integrity and Media Literacy” took place, developing practical recommendations for promoting transparency, accountability and ethical standards in the use of generative AI. The KAS Croatia–Slovenia Office supported the University of Dubrovnik in organizing the event, thereby strengthening the long-term dialogue on responsible AI, freedom of expression and democracy in Southeast Europe.

Ultimately, the “Dubrovnik Media Days” demonstrated that the responsible use of generative AI is a key future task for the media, education and politics. The outcomes of the event will be published in a special issue of the academic journal Media Studies.
