Since the 2021 coup, Myanmar's military government has faced sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and an ongoing civil war, yet it hasn't been left without options. The common image of Myanmar as a completely cut-off "pariah state" may be missing something important.

Dr. Andrea Passeri argues that Myanmar's ruling generals have kept finding room to manoeuvre by playing different foreign partners off one another, careful not to become too dependent on any single one. Drawing on Myanmar's relationships with China, Russia, India, and Japan, the talk traces how these choices echo the country's long history of steering between competing powers rather than aligning fully with any of them, and what this reveals about how even weak, isolated states retain some capacity to shape their own path in a hostile world.
