Use Media to Teach Media

Ideas for media trainers

Use Media to Teach Media addresses the needs of journalism trainers working on the African continent (although its cases and examples can be easily adapted by teachers working in other contexts). The book takes the reader through the process of developing effective training for journalists phase by phase (whether for classroom or newsroom). Use Media takes the novice from training needs assessment, curriculum design, planning content, designing materials and training techniques all the way up to course assessment and follow-up.

In 2005, NIZA and KAS co-funded the development of a training guide for journalism trainers and educators. The book, written by Clas Thor (Sweden), Dr. Ransford Antwi (Ghana) and Willie Olivier (Namibia) is based on several years spent refining the NSJ's Training of Trainers (TOT) courses conducted in the region. Rather than take a theoretical approach to training didactics, the book focuses on practical and thoughtful ideas and tools that trainers can adapt in their own teaching and learning environments.

The book was launched in the presence of the authors and trainers who had recently completed an Advanced TOT programme at the NSJ's Training Facility in Roodeport, Johannesburg.

KAS Media Director Frank Windeck, said that the improvement of the standard of journalism depends equally on the prospect of improving the quality of journalism training in Africa. "The book, Use Media To Teach Media is a step towards this. It a must for journalism educators and trainers in the higher education and mid-career training sectors, as well as newsroom coaches and mentors."
