Reporter Slam Africa 2024

Entertaining stage format with journalists in cooperation with the Reporter Slam Organisation Germany and African citizens.

The event brings journalists into the spotlight and challenges them to tell a unique and interesting way about their work. At the event journalists will compete against each other and present their story as creative as possible and give a behind the scenes look at their life as a journalist. The end of the event the journalist whose story is appeals to the public will be named the Slammer for 2024.

African Media Councils' Meeting

Convened by the South African Press Council and supported by KAS Media Programme Sub-Saharan Africa.

The aim of the meeting is to strengthen self-regulation of media content in Africa by fostering communication and an exchange of information between independent media councils, identifying issues of common concern, discussing the establishment of a network of media councils, and giving African delegates the opportunity to prepare for and attend the conference of the global Organisation of News Ombudsmen and Standards.

Launch of Media Law Handbook for Eastern Africa in Nairobi

KAS Media Africa’s latest publication, the Media Law Handbook for Eastern Africa was launched last week at the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communication in Nairobi. Lawyers, journalists, academics and representatives from civil society attended the launch and listened to author Justine Limpitlaw’s keynote talk about key media law trends in the region. The guests were able to discuss developments with contributing lawyers and take home copies of the handbook free of charge.

African Investigative Journalism Conference with more than 250 participants from 28 countries

This year’s African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC) at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg brought together journalists from 28 countries with the support of KAS Media Africa. In the welcoming session, Anton Harber, adjunct professor at Wits Journalism, said that with over 250 participants, this was the biggest conference ever held.

Defending our freedom of expression starts with knowledge of media law

The author of the KAS Media Law Handbook series, Justine Limpitlaw, gave a public lecture this week at Rhodes University in Grahamstown on key media law trends on the sub-continent. On the initiative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and by invitation of the university, the communications law expert visited the Rhodes School of Journalism and Media Studies, one of the leading institutes for journalism training, to talk about the state of media law in Sub-Saharan Africa and the specific threats to freedom of expression facing the region.
