This is what Christian Spahr, the new head of the Media Program South East Europe of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, is focusing on in an interview for the Bulgarian editorial department of Deutsche Welle. A consensus about professional and ethical standards in the media is in the long term in favour of journalists, publishers and politicians. “Especially print media can in future only survive through high quality, because media competition is constantly rising.”
Overlooking the situation in Bulgaria, Spahr supports both new legislative guarantees and stronger self responsibility in the media sphere. Among other things media ownership should get more transparent and pluralism in publishing should be strengthened. “Media shall not be seen just as other economic goods, because they are an instrument of democracy and play a responsible role for society”, said Spahr.
