Frankfurt Media Law Days on the Role of Public Service Broadcasting in Germany and Southeast Europe

Public service broadcasting is the focus of the 19th Frankfurt Media Law Days on Thursday, December 1, 2022, and Friday, December 2, 2022, at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder). Experts from Germany and Southeast European countries will speak about the task of public broadcasters as a cornerstone of democracy.

The topic will be public broadcasting in the area of tension between factual, balanced information on the one hand and propaganda by autocratic governments on the other. Also in view of current discussions about funding, credibility and individual misconduct of leaders, the question will be addressed how the publicly funded broadcasters can maintain their legitimacy and continue to fulfill their role in the future.

The first day of the conference will focus on the legal and factual position of public broadcasting in Southeast Europe. Representatives from Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania will report on the situation in their countries. On the second day, Dr. Frederik Ferreau from the University of Cologne and Oliver Haustein-Teßmer, editor-in-chief of the Lausitzer Rundschau in Cottbus, will address the question of whether public broadcasting in Germany is a model for Europe.

The attendance at the event will be possible only on personal invitation.
