“Strategies against disinformation and propaganda”

Desinformation and propaganda have the potential to erode trust, exacerbate societal divides, and hinder political engagement. Over the past few years, the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine have accelerated the dissemination of misinformation. In response to this challenge, numerous countries have been developing strategies to address this issue. Notably, the European Union has implemented crucial regulations, including the Digital Services Act, and is actively pursuing additional initiatives such as the Media Freedom Act. It is necessary for the democratic societies to develop strategies to fight the spread of disinformation and propaganda while upholding the principles of free speech and independent journalism.

International Conference “Disinformation in Southeast Europe"

The KAS Media Programme South East Europe, together with the Sofia Security Forum and the Association of European Journalists Bulgaria, organized a conference in Sofia on the 4. of April 2023 focusing on disinformation in the region. The aim was to analyze the influence of fake news and disinformation and how journalists deal with them. Countermeasures to combat disinformation were also discussed.

Adenauer-Lecture with Prof. Claudia Nothelle: "Television is dead - long live television!"

The fifth Adenauer Lecture took place on the 5. of April 2023 at the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". This time the speaker was Prof. Dr. Claudia Nothelle, Professor of Television Journalism at the University of Applied Sciences Magdeburg-Stendal and former Programme Director of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (ARD/rbb).

International Conference “The War Is Fought Not Only On the Battlefields: Russia's Hybrid Warfare"

The KAS Media Program SEE, together with the Sofia Security Forum, organized a conference in Sofia on December 8, 2022, focusing on the Russian War of aggression against Ukraine. The aim was to analyze the impact of Russian aggression on international peace and security, discuss the methods and forms of Russia's hybrid activities against democratic societies, and discuss measures to build resilience against anti-democratic developments and activities.

Adenauer Lecture with Michael Martens: The Experience of a German Correspondent in the Balkans

The fourth Adenauer Lecture took place on December 7 at Sofia University. The speaker was Michael Martens, correspondent for Southeast Europe of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ).

Zagreb: Presentation of the handbook "ABC of Journalism" in Croatian language

followed by an Adenauer Lecture with Dr. Peter Frey

The KAS Media Programme South East Europe presented the German handbook "ABC of Journalism", translated into Croatian, in Zagreb on 21 November 2022. The event was hosted by the University of Zagreb - Faculty of Political Science and Journalism. The book launch was traditionally followed by an Adenauer Lecture - this time on digital transformation in television and the special responsibility of public service broadcasting in Germany. The speaker was Dr. Peter Frey, former editor-in-chief of ZDF.

16. South East Europe Media Forum (SEEMF): The Role of Media in Times of Global Uncertainties

On 16th and 17th of November 2022, the 16th edition of the largest media conference in South East Europe, SEEMF - South East Europe Media Forum, took place in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). More than 250 journalists, media experts and political spokespersons from the region, Ukraine, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands attended the event.

Roundtable in Sarajevo: International Cooperation in Investigative Journalism

On 16 November 2022, in the run-up to the South East Europe Media Forum (SEEMF), twenty investigative journalists from South East Europe, Germany, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic came together to network and discuss opportunities for cross-border cooperation in investigative journalism.

During the 32nd Festival of Eastern European Film in Cottbus on 9 November 2022, the KAS Media Programme SOE and the film production company AgitProp from Sofia presented their documentary film about journalists in Southeast Europe and answered many of the audience's questions that followed the screening.
