The Parliament of Namibia in collaboration with the German Bundestag held a successful training workshop for researchers at the Namibian Parliament. The workshop took place on 17-21 February 2020 and was facilitated by experts from the German Bundestag. In his welcoming remarks, the speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi stated that,
“We consider this exercise very important because research is the backbone of any institution mandated to address challenges. Therefore, we need our Parliament to deepen and strengthen its research capabilities. In this regard, we intend to provide a service to Parliamentarians in terms of sharpening the level of debate in our Parliament. Parliamentary researchers should be of a high level of competence so as to effectively facilitate Parliamentarians to perform oversight responsibilities.
Once again, I am grateful that we have commenced this professional engagement as we move into the Seventh Parliament and I would like to use this opportunity to thank my German counterpart, Hon. Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble, President of the Bundestag and his team supervised by Dr. Jochen Guckes as well as Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Namibia for having facilitated this undertaking.”
26 participants benefitted from the training. Further trainings are envisaged to strengthen the skills of the researchers. In the final evaluation, participants expressed satisfaction with the training, the level of engagements and discussions during the training with the facilitators and information provided by the experts.
Prof. Katjavivi thanked KAS Namibia and its Resident Representative, Mr. Thomas Keller for helping to put the training together.
