Iraq at a Crossroads: Reconfiguring the Role of the United Nations

This paper was inspired by a study visit of a high-ranking Iraqi delegation from Baghdad and Erbil to the United Nations and other institutions in New York in October 2017. This visit entitled “The future role of the United Nations in Iraq” was organized by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s New York office in cooperation with the foundation’s Syria/Iraq Office. The author of this publication, Ali Al-Mawlawi, was part of this delegation. Ali is Head of Research at the Al-Bayan Center for Planning and Studies in Baghdad (www.bayancenter.org).

Catalyzing the SDG's through Expanded Domestic Resource Mobilization

Members of the African Policy Circle Oladiran Bello, Executive Director of Good Governance Africa and Salina Sanou, Head of Policy and Advocacy at ACORD Agency for Co-operation and Research in Development publish a paper on "Catalyzing the SDGs through Expanded Domestic Resource Mobilization ". Their research was conducted subsequent to a dialogue programme entitled "The African Policy Circle goes UN: Empowering local influencers through dialogue on the 2030 Agenda" organized by the KAS New York office.

Members of the African Policy Circle Helen Kezie-Nwoha, Executive Director of Isis Women’s International Cross Cultural Exchange in Uganda and Aditi Lalbahadur, Programme Manager for the Foreign Policy Programme at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) publish a paper on "SDG 16: The Challenge of ‘Sustaining Peace’ in Places of Crisis". Their research was conducted subsequent to a dialogue programme entitled "The African Policy Circle goes UN: Empowering local influencers through dialogue on the 2030 Agenda" organized by the KAS New York office.

Newly elected US President Donald J. Trump submitted his first draft budget on 16 March 2017. In addition to important increases in the defense budget, cutbacks were announced to the draft budgets for the departments of foreign and environmental affairs. In particular, the proposed cuts to the State Department budget could have a significant impact on the work of the United Nations as the United States is currently the greatest individual donor to the UN as a whole.
