Over the past decade, the A3—the three African members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council—have emerged as a cohesive and influential group, shaping dynamics and advancing African priorities on the Council. On January 20, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) New York Office and Security Council Report (SCR) brought together representatives of the NGO community for a briefing and discussion on SCR’s latest report, From the Margins to the Center: The Rise of the A3 in the UN Security Council.

Enhanced and Systematic Coordination for Stronger Maritime Security

Expert Workshop

Maritime security has increasingly gained attention and prominence as a shared concern, yet there still lacks a systematic and holistic approach to addressing its many related challenges. In the absence of one United Nations (UN) coordinating body and integrated strategy, several UN agencies, programmes, and funds are tackling maritime security affairs under different mandates, resulting in a fragmented approach. In view of the above, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) New York Office and Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations convened a workshop on December 5 on “Enhanced and Systematic Coordination for Stronger Maritime Security.” Together with representatives from across the UN system, as well as Member States, they shared best practices/lessons learned from their respective maritime security initiatives and explored recommendations for a more coherent, comprehensive approach among UN entities to address maritime security concerns.

The race for the next UN-Secretary-General: Regional aspirations and global realities

Policy Brief Presentation and Discussion

On October 22, the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional (Cepei) and Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) New York Office co-organized a lunch event previewing their latest policy brief, "The race for the next UN Secretary-General: Regional aspirations and global realities." Looking ahead to the selection of the next Secretary-General in 2027, they assessed the prospects for a Secretary-General from Latin America and the Caribbean and explored the interplay between regional aspirations and global power dynamics.

The Bahamas Conference on Zones of Peace in Global Waters

From 16-17 June 2025, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) New York Office held a two-day conference on international peacebuilding efforts on global waters. The conference involved international institutions, academia and think tanks  to take stock of emerging global and local threats and identify holistic approaches to non-conflict and peacebuilding.

Mikuláš Dzurinda, former Prime Minister of Slovakia (1998-2006) and President of the Martens Centre, and Klaus Welle, former Secretary-General of the European Parliament (2009-2022) and Chair of the Martens Centre Academic Council, reflected on the troubled state of multilateralism, various dynamics that contributed to the current crisis, and opportunities for European leadership in galvanizing multilateral support.

This instalment discussed the importance of strengthened partnerships between the international financial institutions (IFIs) in DC and the United Nations and partners in New York, the centres of development processes and financial decision-making, to address issues of debt sustainability and accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
