Moving Beyond Conflict, Reaching Out to Asia Pacific

The Centrist Democrat International (CDI) is now expanding in the Asia Pacific Region with the formation of the Centrist Democrat International Asia Pacific (CDI-AP) that was founded in Manila, Philippines on January 2006 with the Lakas Christian Muslim Democrats of the Philippines as the host. Seven Asian political parties were the founding members, namely; Lakas Christian Muslim Democrats of the Philippines, Golkar Party of Indonesia, Thai Rak Thai Party of the Kingdom of Thailand, Funcinpec Party and Cambodian People’s Party both from the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Otan Party from Kazakstan and the Pakistan Muslim League Q from Pakistan. Moving Beyond Conflict, Reaching Out to Asia Pacific book is now available.

This book documents the activities held during the launching which also included an interfaith dialogue among various leaders of different faiths. It also contains the Manila Declaration which explains the purposes and ideals of the new political grouping and proclaims the political principles that have brought the parties together. Other issues such as economic development and women and human rights were also discussed. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of the Philippines was the keynote speaker and former President Fidel V. Ramos, Honorary President of CDI International spoke during the special lunch hosted by Speaker Jose de Venecia.

Speaker Jose de Venecia of the Philippines was elected the President of (CDI-AP). He is also currently a Vice President of CDI International. Important leaders from CDI also came to witness the event, such as, former President Jose Maria Aznar of Spain, Speaker of the Italian Parliament Pier Ferdinando Casini, former Prime Minister of Norway Kjell Magne Bondevik, former Prime Minister of Belgium and current President of the European People’s Party Wilfred Martens, and Secretary General of the European People’s Party and of CDI Antonio Lopez Isturiz.

The 2nd meeting of CDI Asia Pacific is to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia on January 26, 2008 hosted by the Golkar Party with the theme, ‘Freedom, Peace, Security and Stability – All Together at the Center’. More political parties from the Asia Pacific region are expected to join.
