9th Workshop on EU-Asia Relations in Global Politics

The 9th Annual Workshop on EU-China Relations in Global Politics was held on 4-5 November 2020 and for the first time virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s topics included energy, political economy, circular economy, and business management methods. Academics and professionals from around the world presented insightful papers to an audience of some 40 participants covering diverse aspects of these topics in Asia and Europe. As every year, the Workshop took place in the framework of UACES Research Network on EU-China Relations and is supported by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Regional Project Energy Security and Climate Change in Asia-Pacific (KAS RECAP). The event was hosted by Deakin University and the ESSCA EU*Asia Institute.

Water Security and Disaster Management in Asia

The workshop analysed the water security challenges in South Asia, especially in the events of hydro-meteorological disaster.


On 13th of July, a round table was held at the city of Temirtau, organized by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Office in Astana in cooperation with JSC ArcelorMittal Temirtau and Kazakhstan’s renewable energy Association. Energy was the main topic of the round table: ’REDUCTION OF CLIMATE POLLUTION AND INCREASE OF EFFICIENCY IN THE FIELD OF COAL USAGE’. During the whole session of the round table, guests and participants were presenting their reports and were actively engaged in discussions.

In light of the presentation “Strategic Perspectives for Bilateral Energy Cooperation between the EU and Kazakhstan”, a conference about the issues of energy security and renewable energies was held on the 16th of February at Nazarbayev University in Astana.

Dr. Peter Hefele and Thomas Helm visit Astana Solar

Together with Dr. Peter Hefele, the head of the KAS regional program for “Energy Security and Climate Change” in Asia, Thomas Helm, the resident representative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Kazakhsan, visited the company Astana Solar in the Kazakh capital on the 15th of February.
