The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) South Africa is pleased to announce the launch of its new policy paper, German Business in Sub‑Saharan Africa: Leveraging South Africa as a Regional Hub, written by Dr Christian Lindfeld. This extensive study provides a data‑driven and practice‑oriented analysis of how German companies can strengthen their commercial presence across Sub‑Saharan Africa by using South Africa as a key strategic gateway.
The publication combines a robust conceptual framework with empirical insights derived from interviews with German multinationals, sector associations, financiers, and local impact partners. It outlines both the opportunities and the structural barriers shaping German engagement across the continent, including political risks, logistical constraints, regulatory uncertainty, and strong competition from global counterparts. It also highlights the growing potential in sectors such as renewable energy, agribusiness, digitalisation, and local value creation.
Significantly, the paper offers concrete recommendations for German companies seeking sustainable expansion, as well as guidance for policymakers on strengthening institutional coordination, trade frameworks, and investment support.
This publication adds to KAS South Africa’s growing body of research on economic cooperation, governance, and regional development, supporting informed decision‑making and reinforcing Germany’s long‑term partnerships across the African continent.
