In this context, the systematic diversification of its local economy is regarded an essential cornerstone of the country’s transformation strategy, the so called “Vision 2020”. Against this background, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a key role. Oman seeks to support SMEs through targeted measures, thus allowing Oman to enter new markets and provide new job opportunities for Omani youth. To this end, the Sultanate founded the “Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development” (Riyada). This agency is a key player in supporting young entrepreneurs and helping their ventures grow into successful businesses.

At the same time, SMEs encounter new communicative and technological challenges when competing with other firms both locally and globally. After all, social media already play a decisive role with regard to building repute, brand loyalty and tackling customers’ concerns. Moreover, the results of the 6th Arab Social Media Report (2014) suggest that the significance of social media will continue to grow. In Oman, the number of Facebook users has increased fivefold between 2010 and 2014, meaning that some 840,000 Omanis are now registered with the social network. This number is equivalent with a fifth of Oman’s total population.

Against this backdrop, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung’s Regional Office Gulf States and the Omani SME authority Riyada will carry out a two-day workshop in Muscat, Oman from June 1-2, 2016. The training with an international and an Omani expert on social media has two goals. Firstly, Riyada shall be supported by developing a social media strategy to increase its outreach and strengthen its support of young entrepreneurs. Secondly, Riyada’s capacity to equip young Omani entrepreneurs with the ability to use social media professionally and efficiently shall be enhanced.
