As part of its annual civic education program, the Youth Pioneer Society (YPS), held on June 6, 2022, a workshop on how to be socially active in Bahrain. The workshop aimed to discuss the different ways in which people can be influential in their surroundings and the different ways of having influence in different areas.

Held at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel in Bahrain and attended by 80 Bahraini young men and women, the workshop, which lasted two hours, took an interaction format between the speakers and the audience. The workshop was opened by a brief discussion between the moderator, Ms. Noora AlMansoori, and the panelists: Mr. Nawaf AlHajeri, Ms. Rehab Shareef, Mr. Khalid AlShamlan, and Ms. Manal Talal. During the opening discussion, the panelists were asked to elaborate on how young men and women can be influential and affect society in different realms.

Mr. Nawaf AlHajeri talked about “influence” in the realm of volunteerism, social work, and civic engagement and how that can be tied to purposeful content creation and business opportunities. He also put an emphasis on how passion is the greatest drive when it comes to starting an initiative, mixed in with trial and error, experiences, and reflection.

Ms. Rehab Sharif talked about her own life experience and how she started her journey when she was very young by reading books and looking into literature. Like Mr. AlHajeri, the driving force for her societal engagement was her passion and one of the means to find her own way. She also noted that “even though financial independence is very important to be influential, it is not by itself a motif for an active engagement in the society.”

Mr. Khalid Al-Shamlan explained the personal qualities that are necessary to be “influential.” He said one should love her/his work, be distinguished in it, and persistent in following the goals s/he wants to achieve.” Finally, Ms. Manal Talal, who started her work in the marketing industry online, said, “being a public figure makes it easier for people to share their feedback and that the person must choose their content and language of their message wisely in order to influence others.” She also noted that in modern times means of communication with others are abundant and therefore it is easy to influence others; however, in order to do so, one needs to have a message that is delivered heart-to-heart.”

The Youth Pioneer Society is a Bahraini civil society organization that aims to increase knowledge and awareness of youth issues and improve the opportunities, trust, and cooperation between the Bahraini youth.
