Book Publication: Gender Equality and Political Processes in Kenya

The publication "Gender Equality and Political Processes in Kenya: Challenges and Prospects" (ed. Japhet Biegon) was launched during the Annual Law Conference of the International Commission of Jurists, Kenyan Section in November 2016. This book addresses and summarizes the issue of the Jurists' Conference of 2015, which was implemented in cooperation with the KAS Rule of Law Program for Sub-Saharan Africa, ICJ Kenya and the National Gender and Equality Commission. Africa is affected particularly strongly by the impacts of climate change. The continent, home to 1.2 billion people, many of whom live below the poverty line, is experiencing more frequent instances of drought and torrential rain. The implementation of the Paris Climate Protection Agreement of December 2015 will depend substantially on the steps African states will be prepared to take to drive their further development while making efforts to minimise the emission of greenhouse gases.

It is life imprisonment for Chad’s Former President Hissène Habré

The trial of the former Chadian president Hissène Habré which began on 20th July 2015 before the Extraordinary African Chambers in Senegal came to an end on 30th May 2016with a guilty verdict against the former dictator and military ruler for crimes against humanity, war crimes as well as torture. He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.

THE LAW AND THE POACHING MENACE IN AFRICA

It is apparent that states should strengthen their criminal justice systems to combat this phenomenon. It should be a major objective to increase law enforcement responses to wildlife crimes. Additionally, policies should be put in place to ensure that wildlife is protected through recruiting, training and equipping rangers to perform their duties adequately...Nonetheless, good laws alone without enforcement will not help us fight this menace…over to you all enforcers; play your part and only then shall the rule of law be respected and strengthened.
