The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon announced on Tuesday 6th May 2014 that the former Vice President Ariek Machar who is reported to be the rebel chief in the war in South Sudan has promised to attend peace talks scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia aimed at bringing to an end the civil war in Africa’s newest nation.
The talks had been tentatively planned for Friday 9th May 2014 but they may have to be rescheduled to allow Machar time to travel to the venue.
Ban Ki-Moon’s visit to the troubled state came just days after US Secretary of State John Kerry had visited and warned of dire consequences if the war continued.
So far five agreements have been signed by the warring groups to allow relief supplies into the country. Source AFP
