The National Council for Securitate Archives Research and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation – Romania are hosting the CNSAS conference – "25 Years Since the Opening of the Securitate Archives. Romanian Post-Communism", dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the promulgation of the law on access to one's own file and the exposure of the Securitate as a political police force.
The event, taking place on November 25 in the Palace of the Parliament, in the "C. A. Rosetti" Hall, and on November 26 in the Hall of the Romanian Academy, will bring together historians and archival specialists from Romania and Moldova, as well as representatives of the key institutions that managed the Securitate files after 1990. A panel discussion will explore the role of archives in rebuilding a democratic society, and a special session will analyze the ethical and legal controversies surrounding the disclosure of the Securitate files. Professors and researchers from various universities and research institutes across the country will present lectures.
The results of 25 years of free access to the archives of the former Securitate includes tens of thousands of visits to the CNSAS reading room, over 14 million document copies viewed, and, not least, over 2,000 court rulings confirming violations of fundamental human rights by members of the communist political police. Above these figures, however, stands the enormous benefit that access to the files from the Securitate archives has brought to knowledge and the development of civic awareness.
