Cybersecuring the Modern Bioeconomy

by Eleonore Pauwels

Policy Imperatives for the AI-Genomics Convergence

AI, biotechnology, and quantum computing are fusing into a new domain of opportunity — and risk. This paper unpacks how this convergence could expose scientific systems to cyberattacks, espionage, and data manipulation. The analysis is based on a study and event hosted by KAS USA earlier this year.

Every October, global attention to technology and security converges. Cybersecurity Awareness Month promotes resilience and cooperation across governments and industry, while the UN First Committee on Disarmament and International Security debates how technologies such as AI, cyber, and quantum computing reshape warfare and deterrence. As AI, cyber, and biotech increasingly intersect, multilateral actors must link awareness with governance and foresight—developing norms, accountability, and preparedness mechanisms that keep pace with the accelerating convergence of security and technology.
