Please join CSIS and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) for the first in a three-part discussion series which examines different aspects of German Chancellor Merkel’s legacy. This first conversation will assess Chancellor Merkel’s legacy as a leader within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Germany, and the EU for the past 16 years, her engagement with three very different U.S. presidents, and her global role as one of the longest serving, most recognized, and trusted world leaders. How does the election of Armin Laschet as leader of the CDU reflect on her legacy of leadership? What will Germany’s domestic and foreign policy look like with a new German government and new generation of leaders? And what are the implications for the U.S.-German relationship, the future of NATO, and addressing challenges such as China and Russia?
