From July 2 to 3, 2025, the Forum Économique Côte d’Ivoire 2025 took place at the Novotel Marcory in Abidjan. Around 50 participants from Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, and Togo came together at the invitation of the KAS Regional Programme Political Dialogue West Africa. The forum brought together members of parliament, entrepreneurs, researchers, and civil society actors to discuss the topic “Regulatory policy and the social market economy”. Its aim was to explore new paths for a fair, competitive, and socially just economy in the region – with a special focus on a localized approach to the Social Market Economy.
On July 2, the forum was officially opened by Dr. Stefanie Brinkel (KAS) and Mathias Klein (Chargé d’Affaires, German Embassy). In their speeches, they emphasized the importance of regional dialogue and political responsibility for inclusive economic development.
The first day focused on the current economic situation in the three countries. Despite stable growth, structural challenges such as high poverty rates, underemployment, and social inequality persist. The discussions showed that a purely market-driven economy is not enough. Clear rules, social protection, and fair conditions are needed – tailored to the realities and needs of the region.
A key topic was how the Social Market Economy model can be applied in West African contexts. Expert presentations outlined the concept, which combines economic freedom with social responsibility. Speakers and participants stressed that the model cannot be copied directly but must be adapted to local conditions, taking into account cultural, social, and economic specificities.
On the second day, participants worked in three groups on social protection, the role of the state, and sustainable regulation. They developed practical proposals, including strengthening local health and social systems, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, fair taxation, and investment in education and digitalization. The results were presented and discussed in the plenary. Participants strongly advocated for deepened cooperation between the countries and called for continuing the dialogue at both national and regional levels.
The Forum Économique Côte d’Ivoire 2025 demonstrated that the Social Market Economy can serve as a viable guiding framework in West Africa – provided it is locally interpreted and implemented. The balance between economic freedom and social justice offers a promising foundation for sustainable and inclusive development in the region.
