Public Symposium "East-Africa's Rising Middle Class: Challenges and Opportunities"
Uganda's middle class is growing but requisite economic opportunities must be created to match this growth. Together with Goethe-Zentrum Kampala UGCS, we will organise a pubic symposium at Makerere University on the 16th of August to discuss the challenges and opportunities of a rising middle class. Besides awarding the winners of a Photo Contest – presenting lived realities of Kampala’s Middle Class – we are looking forward to a lively symposium discussing East-African perspectives on the Middle Class with the following panellists: Milton Ayoki (UG), Yamara-Monika Wessling (DE) and James Muriuki (KE).

Youth Leadership Training (POLA-LAB)
The political Leadership Advancement Lab (POLA-Lab) is a project aimed at mentoring a new breed of effective and reflective leaders with skills to deal with contemporary development challenges. Therefore, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and UNiFOG will conduct a one-day Training Workshop on Leadership Skills for youth leaders, youth representatives from civil society and selected student leaders.
Youth4Policy Writing Workshop
Fellows of the Youth4Policy fellowship are meeting to advance on their policy briefs which will later be published. In the writing workshop, the fellows receive expert input to guide them along the writing process.

The 2019 edition of the conference will focus on the theme "Social Media and the Prospects for Digital Politics in Africa". It will bring together speakers and host discussions on meaningful political engagement on social media platforms for both citizens as well as politicians.
Reflection Meeting for District and Sub-County Women Caucuses
Action for Development (ACFODE) in partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) encourages female leaders to increase transformative representation of women in political and decision-making positions. One of the key strategies used is Women Caucuses. ACFODE and KAS will conduct a follow-up of the women caucus in Kabale District.
Interparty Youth Platform National Dialogue 2019
The National Dialogue, organised by the Interparty Youth Platform (IYOP) in partnership with KAS, focuses on Youth Participation in the National Dialogue Process and the 2021 General Elections. The consultative meeting will offer a platform for youth leaders to debate and form positions on the National dialogue and the electoral process roadmap 2021.

The Government Citizen Interaction Centre (GCIC) in partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung convened a workshop on the theme “Building capacity to enhance efficiency of Government - Citizen Interaction”. Predicaments of Uganda’s Middleclass as Portrayed by Three Photographers
Africa’s middle-class as defined by certain criteria such as secondary schooling completion, decent housing, and skilled employment is rising. Though the Ugandan middle class population accounts a small portion, urban dynamics present opportunities for a significant demographic rise of this social class. As part of the Future Africa Vision in Time (FAVT) Exhibition Opening Events, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung partnered with the German Cultural Institute, the Goethe-Zentrum Kampala, hosting a public symposium on the challenges and opportunities of a rising middle-class in Africa in general and Uganda in particular.
What does Success mean? – African Young Leaders come together for Reflection Seminar
Change requires ideas and ideas demand people who reflect and approach them. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and LéO Africa Institute are therefore bringing together young and aspiring thinkers of a new generation. Already in its third year, the Young Emerging Leaders Project (YELP) brings together over 20 change makers of various fields to reflect and learn more about servant leadership and why it is a key ingredient for addressing the 21st century leadership and development challenges. From 8 to 11 August, 2019, we welcomed 21 fellows of this third cohort for a seminar on “Achieving and Managing Success” at Victoria Forest Resort, Kalangala.
“Political Participation Isn’t just about Voting”
Youth Leadership Training in Fort Portal
On 3 August 2019, 25 young leaders from the Kabarole district took part in a training session on the topics of political economy analysis, advocacy and social mobilisation. The Political Leadership Advancement Laboratory (PoLA-LAB) is a youth-focused training for political leaders organised in cooperation with the University Forum on Governance (UNIFOG). PoLA-LAB is a one-day session that includes an interactive and participatory approach to promote a better understanding of development challenges through an analysis of the political economy. The sessions also focus on lobbying and political mobilisation, as well as moderating conversations aimed at promoting constructive civic engagement beyond election times and cycles.
Public Policy In New Political Realities – Youth4Policy Networking Event
The first Youth4Policy networking event under the theme – ‘influencing public policy in new political realities’ was convened as an interactive event for the Alumni and current Youth4Policy Fellows. The networking dinner officially launched the Youth4Policy alumni network and enabled alumni, fellows and staff to build a community of policy professionals who share a common interest to positively influence public policy outcomes.
Youth4Policy Fellows headed off to their second policy learning mission
From Thursday, July 25th to Saturday, July 27th, the current cohort of Youth4Policy fellows came together for their Second Policy Learning Mission in Kampala. The programme was designed to provide practical first-hand experience of policy processes and to enable the fellows to interact with policy decision-makers and implementers. Moreover, the mission offered the fellows a chance to develop their preliminary policy research further by providing them with insights on professional writing and presentation tools.
