25th Anniversary of the Euro – Navigating through Crisis towards Stability

Working Breakfast of the KAS-BdB Finance Forum 2024

The start of the new year was also the 25-year anniversary of the Euro. These 25 years were – in part – very tumultuous years. The Euro and with it also the EU has developed in unexpected ways. Its guardian, the European Central Bank, had to take on a much more active role than it had been envisioned originally. The currency itself and its image has also changed over the years. Despite the troubled start it has also become a symbol for European Unity and how close we as Europeans have grown together over the years.

Details

We witnessed how the global financial crisis turned into a sovereign debt crisis – also labeled Eurocrisis. Euroskepticism that had risen in these years was also linked to the introduction of the Euro and its consequences. The Euro became a symbol for austerity and fiscal transfers. Today though, after some years of economic growth, a pandemic and a war in Europe, only very few question the existence of the Euro.

In this event we would like to take stock of how the Euro has developed over the last 25 years and compare that to the initial expectations. But also give an outlook on what the future holds for the Euro and for us as Europeans. Is the Euro fit for future challenges? How does the Euro hold up in the international context?

To discuss this, we have put together a panel of experts who will be able to give their unique perspectives: Boris Kisselevsky, Head of Office of the ECB Brussels Representation and Carsten Brzeski, Chief Economist at ING Germany, and a Member of the European Parliament (TBC). Sandra Parthie, Head of the Brussels Office of the German Economic Institute, will moderate the event.

The joint event of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Association of German Banks (BdB) will take place on Wednesday, 24 January from 08:30 am to 10:30 am. We look forward to welcoming you at the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung!

Limited places are available. To join the waiting list for attending the panel discussion in person at the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, please contact stanislav.linchevsky@kas.de
