On Tuesday, November 8, 2022, the mid-term elections will take place in the United States. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate will be up for election. The midterms are traditionally the first decisive elections after the election of a new president. In this case, President Biden, who has been in office since 2021, will have to consider the results of the midterms as feedback on his work so far. However, a lot of power is at stake in terms of decision-making and implementing the government’s agenda. Therefore, the election results will, without a doubt, have an impact on the remainder of the Biden-term.

In addition to these internal consequences, the election could have medium- and long-term implications for the European Union. Joe Biden, a longtime transatlantic advocate, is pursuing an agenda that is not exactly at odds with President Trump's "America First" strategy, but President Biden has added to it a solid dose of social policy and international, or more precisely, transatlantic partnership. The EU particularly benefits from this when it comes to joint defense projects (NATO), joint environmental and sustainability projects and, more generally, a reliable partner on the other side of the Atlantic.

The Midterms could be a decisive moment for the years to come and, therefore, for the orientation of the Western World in the future. Following the online-event organized by our U.S. office, which will shed light on the American perspective, the European Office of KAS, wants to take a European perspective on the Midterms and outline in more detail possible consequences of the elections for the European Union and Western cohesion as a whole.
