Sharpest decline in remittances

The World Bank estimates that remittance flows will have the sharpest decline in 2020. Remittances will fall 22.1 % in South Asia and 13% in East Asia and the Pacific.

Key messages include:

1. Disruptions in remittances mean that recipient households will have lower income and remittance-dependent countries will suffer sharper economic downturns.

 

2. Migrant workers are vulnerable. They are often the first to be laid off and the last to get access to testing and treatment in host countries.

 

3. Policy responses to COVID-19 must must include migrant workers.
