Details

This project aims at meeting the huge interest towards the Social Market Economy Theory expressed by many stakeholders during Al-Quds and KAS latest activities, and supported by Germany’s desire to promote this concept as a possible solution for the urgent socio-economic issues in the region. As followup Al-Quds Center for Political Studies wants to organize a conference that discusses major common principles of the theory of Social Market Economy and Islamic economics, and how these could be adapted to local realities. SME seems more in accordance with Islamic economic principles and values than the free market theory. While facing the repercussions of structural reforms, liberalization and reduced national autonomy due to globalization, Jordan and the Arab countries urgently search for economic concepts and autentic solutions that would address the deficiencies of their current economic systems. While public debate on Islamic economics is often reduced to Islamic banking, not many Islamic scholars have tried to translate major Islamic principles into an authentic economic framework that would enhance the capacity of Arab economies to fulfill the aspirations of the people and actually contribute to development. Comparative analysis of major elements of social market economy would lead to a sincere dabate and re-discovering of original Islamic Principles such as social justice, equality and fairness, respect for the market and property rights, and consultative governance (shura) for the overall well being of the citizens. Many of the Islamic economic principles are widely practiced in Asian Muslim societies. Muslim scholars and experts in East Asian economies therefore would contribute a deeper understanding, consensus-building and results to benefit economic reforms.
