Europe and the Middle East - Auslandsbüro Jordanien
Seminar
Details
In terms of cultural exchange between Europe and the Middle East, Beirut plays a crucial role. The Lebanese capitel shares with Cairo the reputation to be the Arab publishing capital, and its multi-lingual imprint has made Beirut the center par excellence for translations of foreign books into Arabic. However, since the 80s the decrease of the number of translated books seems to be a symptom of crises of the publishing industry in the Arab world. At the same time, Europe has become a place where writers and intellectuals from the Arab world have found a more fruitful working environment. The aim of the round table debate is to assess the state of the art of cross-border publishing.
