A few years ago, several international organizations including the WFP, UNICEF, and UNHCR among others, designated Yemen as the world’s worst-largest humanitarian crisis. The war, according to U.N. reports, put 24.3 million people “at risk” of hunger and disease, of whom roughly 14.4 million were in acute need of assistance. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has just exacerbated food insecurity, especially since a large percentage of Yemen’s need for grain used to be imported from Ukraine.

At the same time, the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY) is working hard on maintaining the truce between the warring parties following the Houthis’ refusal to extend it unless their new demands are met.

Against this backdrop, KAS Jordan Office is holding a panel discussion to deliberate on two topics: the implication of the war in Ukraine on the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and the prospects for peace.
