This August’s theme is ‘the West’s Approach to the Indo-Pacific’ in which we will look into the detail of the U.S.’s Indo-Pacific strategy under the Biden administration, the EU’s common voice on the Indo-Pacific, as well as Germany’s new approach to the region and the post-Merkel international politics.

Background

International Relations Synopsis, co-organized by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Cambodia and four educational partners, is a monthly public discussion that brings researchers, diplomats, experts and practitioners to discuss relevant international relations and global politics topics that have currently happened with interested young Cambodian students. 

 

With this August’s theme, ‘the West’s Approach to the Indo-Pacific,’ we will look into the detail of the U.S.’s Indo-Pacific strategy under the Biden administration, the EU’s common voice on the Indo-Pacific, as well as Germany’s new approach to the region and the post-Merkel international politics. 

 

Objective

International Relations Synopsis aims to

  • construct an open-discussion environment on international relations and politics among young Cambodian students,
  • provoke public discussion on beyond national politics topics,
  • boost public critical thinking and analysis, and
  • leverage the network among international relations people in Cambodia.

 

Target Audience

University students in Cambodia

By Ms. Isabel Weininger, Representative to Cambodia of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung 

 

Ms. Weininger has been the Country Representative of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in Cambodia since January 2021. Prior to that she was responsible for Southeast Asia in the department Asia and the Pacific of KAS headquarters in Berlin. From 2018 to 2019 she had been posted to the KAS office in Kyiv and before that, she worked for the Munich Security Conference. Ms. Weininger studied Political Science and International Relations in Munich, Paris and Dresden.

Ambassador H.E. Mr. Christian Berger, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom of Cambodia

 

Ambassador Berger has had a profound experience in Germany's foreign affairs for more than 30 years. He entered foreign service in 1986 and became a Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to NATO (1992-1993) and Personal Assistant to State Secretary von Ploetz (1995-1999) before being posted as a Head of German Mission to Laos (2000-2004), Ecuador (2007-2010), Iraq (2010-2012), Vietnam (2016-2019), and recently Cambodia (2019-present).

Dr. Bradley J. Murg, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Associate Professor of International Relations, Paragon International University

 

Dr. Mrug spent seven years as a professor and director of Global Development Studies at Seattle Pacific University as well as an affiliate professor at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Affairs at the University of Washington before moving to Paragon International University, Cambodia. He is also a Senior Advisor and Distinguished Research Fellow at the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace (CICP). Dr. Murg  graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Emory University with a B.A./M.A. in philosophy, received an M.Sc. in economic history from the London School of Economics, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Washington.

16:25 – 16:35 Input on EU’s Approach to the Indo-Pacific

Mr. Tihamér Czika, Deputy Chief of Mission, Delegation of the European Union to Cambodia

 

Mr. Czika worked in both political, NGO and the academic sector before joining the EU civil service in 2011. Between 2015-2020, he worked at the European Commission's humanitarian aid and civil protection department, mainly focusing on EU humanitarian programs in the Middle-East, and Asia-Pacific and bilateral relations with donor countries of East-Asia and civil protection cooperation with ASEAN. He was previously attached to the Commission's communication department, dealing mainly with corporate communication of the EU's external relations. Mr. Czika holds a Master's degree in EU Lawfrom the Babeș-Bolyai University, Romania.

*Mr. Oudom joined the Foundation in August 2020 as a Research Officer. Prior to that, he was an intern at UNICEF Cambodia and U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh. He has a profound background in model diplomatic meetings with his 2018-2019 vice-presidency of the University's Model United Nations (MUN) Club. Mr. Oudom graduated from Paragon International University with a High Honors degree in Political Science and International Relations and with a thesis.
