Emerging questions in view of COVID-19

Research has demonstrated the success of democracies confronting many health challenges, compared to other forms of government: Various studies show a link between democracy and lower child mortality, longer adult life expectancy and reduced mortality i.a. from cardiovascular diseases. However, the performance of democracies in responding to the coronavirus pandemic so far has been mixed. Many countries with the highest cumulative cases of COVID-19 are in fact democracies. Some democracies have been considered as exemplary in the handling of the crisis, while others have struggled to respond appropriately to the pandemic. This webinar will provide the opportunity to discuss which elements best explain the underperformance of many democracies in the coronavirus pandemic and which measures must be taken to make political systems more “pandemic proof”.
