Civil Society actors from the Central and Western region who were previously trained as grassroots civic educators under the project, “Action for Strengthening Good Governance and Accountability in Uganda” converged at Lake View Hotel, Mbarara between 10th-12th June 2012 to participate in a three day review workshop of the grassroots training activities they had participated in. The newly trained civic educators hailed from the districts of Kisoro, Kabale and Mbarara in the Western region and Kiboga as well as Masaka in the central region.

The review workshop which was officially opened by Mr. Dues Tumusiime – the District Chairperson Mbarara gave opportunity for the participants to share their overall experiences from the grassroots trainings they had carried out including the challenges faced, lessons learnt, and recommendations on how future trainings could be improved.

The workshop was also used as an opportunity to impart knowledge on some basics of planning, designing and mobilizing resources for projects, particularly civic education activities at the grassroots level. Mr. Yusuf Kiranda, the Project Manager took the participants through some basic tools and approaches that could be employed to plan, design and manage projects. Also at hand was Mr. Chris Gumisiriza, Grants Officer - EU DGAP; who gave some insight on resource mobilization.

Mrs. Regina Bafaki the Executive Director, ACFODE who was also present during the review workshop lent her expertise throughout the sessions and was especially vital in leading the CSO actors in the discussion on forging a way forward for sustaining of their work; particularly that related to promoting good governance and accountability and forming a networking platform in this regard.

The invaluable input that was made by the CSO actors throughout this workshop once again proves that this project only stands to build momentum as implementation progresses. With the upcoming National Networking conference scheduled to take place in July, participants will have an opportunity to share their experiences and exchange best practices on how to effectively promote and monitor democratic accountability at local level.
