Experts from all of the three sectors of society participated at the event which took place in São Paulo. The presentations and debates were complemented by a group workshop which had as its centre the sharing of experiences and visions related to the consideration of adaptability to climate change.

The event focused on the private sector as a dynamic player. As such, numerous presentations were held from the perspective of entrepreneurs. Provisions that would balance the impact of climate change on the electrical grid were demanded by one of the speakers. So far, this aspect had been neglected, as only reductions of emissions through the use of so called smart grids had been at the centre of attention. Moreover, other challenges should be included, especially in Brazil. One of them is the grown number of lightnings, which chastise Brazil more than any other country in the world. The opportunity for today's investment into the electricity grid should not be wasted and should correspond directly to the potential of climate change. New business opportunities might also arise from climate changes, especially for insurance companies. However, that such moves represent a process of financial adaptation to climate change have so far been accepted only on a limited level by interested parties, while governments have been especially slow at such.

Summing up, it became clear, that many corporations do not yet have meticulous plans and roadmaps at hand in responding to the new challenges. However, networks within industries or in partnerships with NGOs and government institutions have already achieved considerable progress towards adaptation strategies.

All presentations are available on the Homepage of Fundação Getúlio Vargas (portuguese only).
