The development cooperation of the European Union – MUN simulation at UFRRJ - Foundation Office Brazil
Event Reports
A focus of the work of KAS Brazil is to promote the internationalization of young Brazilian students. KAS Brazil therefore supports numerous simulations of the United Nations (“MUN”) both ideologically and monetarily. The UFRRJ organizes annually a week-long simulation event that includes simulations of diverse UN bodies and expert talks to current questions of international politics.
Christian Matthäus, a trainee at KAS Brazil, hold a presentation about “The development cooperation of the European Union” where he focused on the priorities of the European development cooperation and presented its evolution.
He stated that while European countries maintained their national development cooperation they would also contribute to European development cooperation. In the case of Germany non-governmental and religiously rooted organizations as well as political foundations would be playing an important role and be deceptive for the diversity of German development cooperation.
European development cooperation always builds up on the democratic premise to involve all actors and to combine economic progress with environmental sensitivity. This value-led cooperation at eye level would differ qualitatively from the new actors in development policy, in particular from the premises of the People`s Republic of China.
Citing Matthäus, democracy is the strength of Europe. As Brazil is a stable democracy also sharing the same fundamental values it is a longtime trusted partner of Europe and Germany.
During the following panel discussion Matthäus answered questions of students and discussed with them the values in international politics as well as the role of Brazil as an emerging leading power in Latin America, which has already become an investor and donor itself for development aid in Africa.
