In this online format, we are organising discussions with the Director of a different KAS Office on a regular basis, in which the latest developments in the respective country or region as well as the status quo of the relations with the European Union are discussed. The next session will focus on Georgia and its relations to the European Union between accession and geopolitical tensions.

This ses-sion will focus on Portugal, where early Parliamentary Elections are scheduled for 10 March 2024.

25th Anniversary of the Euro – Navigating through Crisis towards Stability

The start of the new year was also the 25-year anniversary of the Euro. These 25 years were – in part – very tumultuous years. The Euro and with it also the EU has developed in unexpected ways. Its guardian, the European Central Bank, had to take on a much more active role than it had been envisioned originally. The currency itself and its image has also changed over the years. Despite the troubled start it has also become a symbol for European Unity and how close we as Europeans have grown together over the years.

The Joint Africa-EU Partnership on Democratic Governance and Human Rights

At the Lisbon EU-Africa Summit, a historic Joint Strategy was signed to govern the EU´s and Africa’s relationship, aiming at partnership and mutual accountability and thus moving beyond the recipient-donor relationship of the past. Having identified eight priority areas of collaboration in the EU-Africa Action Plan (2008-2010) there are numerous challenges laying ahead especially with regards to the implementation of commitments made in the Strategy and Action Plan. The conference report summarizes the results of a two days workshop, organized by the European Office of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the European office of Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung on the second priority of the Africa-EU partnership on Democratic Governance and Human rights.

In addition to the yearly conference in Rio de Janeiro, June 10th to 12th 2008, the Europe-Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Fundation in cooperation with the Studies Centre has organised a European conference on matters of international security policy.

Islam, Christianity and Europe

The fourth and last meeting of this series of Seminars organised by the Church and Society Commission of CEC, COMECE and the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) was devoted to the topic of "The external relationships of the European Union with Muslim countries and the international responsibility of religious communities". One of the issues raised was the question of reciprocity in terms of religious freedom. One hundred participants, including MEPs and civil servants of the EU institutions, as well as members of religious organisations and communities, took part in the seminar and in the ensuing debate.

'Christian Europe' and Islam in Europe

How does ‘Christian Europe’ receive Islam in Europe? How to address the fear of ‘Islamisation’ of Europe and what are the chances for ‘Europeanisation’ of Islam? These were the questions addressed during the third meeting of the series of seminars devoted to Islam, Christianity and Europe organised by COMECE, the Church and Society Commission (CSC) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) on 3 July 2008 at the European Parliament.

Programme Report: Social Cohesion in Latin America on Local and Regional Level

From 23 to 27 June 2008 the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organised a Study Trip and Dialogue Programme for five representatives of local government organisa-tions from Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Mexico and Guatemala taking place in Berlin and Brussels.
