Democracy depends on participation, and elections are one of its most fundamental expressions. Ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general elections, KAS Ghana supported a youth-led campaign aimed at raising awareness among young people about the importance of voting and political participation. At a time when political disengagement and frustration with established politics can discourage younger citizens from participating, the initiative sought to reinforce a simple message: every vote matters.

At the heart of the campaign was a peer-to-peer approach. Around 300 young people actively carried the message into their own communities and networks, engaging other young Ghanaians in conversations about elections, democratic participation and their own role as citizens. Rather than being passive recipients of political education, they became multipliers themselves, encouraging their peers to reflect on why participation matters and why choosing to vote is an important way of making their voices heard.

Voting is more than casting a ballot. It is an expression of political choice and a fundamental way for citizens to participate in shaping the political direction of their country. By supporting initiatives that encourage young people to engage with democratic processes and become multipliers within their own communities, KAS seeks to strengthen political participation and democratic citizenship, particularly among a generation whose engagement will play an important role in Ghana’s democratic future.
