Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities
Asset Publisher
Democracy can only be inclusive when all members of society have the opportunity to participate. Persons with disabilities continue to face significant barriers to political, economic and social participation in Ghana. While legislation and policies provide a framework for inclusion and equal rights, important gaps remain between these commitments and their implementation in everyday life.
In recent years, KAS Ghana has therefore expanded its work with organisations representing persons with disabilities. Together with its local partner, KAS creates platforms to assess the implementation of existing legislation, identify remaining shortcomings and discuss how policies can be translated more effectively into practice.
At the centre of this work are persons with disabilities themselves. Dialogue and advocacy platforms provide opportunities to share experiences, build networks and make their perspectives and everyday realities more visible. At the same time, they create direct interaction with political and institutional decision-makers, enabling participants to articulate their priorities and contribute to discussions about policies that directly affect their lives.
This work reflects a fundamental principle of democratic participation: people should not only be the beneficiaries of policies but have a voice in shaping them. By strengthening advocacy, visibility and direct political dialogue, KAS Ghana seeks to contribute to a democracy in which groups that have traditionally been underrepresented can participate more fully in political and public life.
