KAS Ghana
For at least a quarter of a century, KAS Ghana has supported young people through its scholarship programme. Over the years, hundreds of students from across Ghana have become part of a network that extends far beyond financial support for academic studies. At its core is the conviction that education should not only create individual opportunities, but also enable young people to take responsibility and actively contribute to their communities and society.
KAS scholarships therefore combine academic support with a comprehensive accompanying programme. Scholars participate in workshops, seminars, political dialogue and tailored capacity-building activities designed to complement their academic education with practical skills and a deeper understanding of political, social and economic issues. The aim is not simply to support successful students, but to encourage engaged young people to become active citizens and contribute their knowledge and abilities to shaping Ghana’s future.
An important part of this approach is ensuring that opportunities reach beyond Accra and Ghana’s major urban centres. KAS scholars come from across the country, including northern and rural communities where access to educational opportunities, professional networks, and development programmes can be more limited. Once their scholarship ends, they automatically become part of KAS Ghana’s alumni network – a community that has grown over several decades and today connects different generations and professional backgrounds.
Through mentoring and networking, experienced alumni are connected with current and younger scholars, helping them navigate the transition from university into professional life and engagement in politics, civil society, academia or business. The annual scholarship and alumni network meeting brings members from across Ghana together to exchange experiences, build relationships and strengthen these connections across generations.
Many former KAS scholars have gone on to assume positions of responsibility in Ghanaian politics, business and society. Their paths reflect the long-term idea behind the programme: a scholarship may support an individual for a limited period, but investing in people, their sense of responsibility, and the networks between them can have an impact for decades.
