Queen Mothers

Queen Mothers are an integral part of Ghana's traditional governance system and play important roles in community leadership, social welfare, cultural preservation and conflict mediation. Despite their influence and responsibilities, they have historically enjoyed less institutional recognition, fewer organisational structures and more limited access to resources than their male counterparts. Strengthening their position is therefore closely linked to promoting women's rights, gender equality and more inclusive decision-making within traditional governance and society.

An important part of KAS Ghana's longstanding cooperation with Queen Mothers has been the development of sustainable networks and representative structures. Together with its partner CIKOD, KAS supported the establishment of a network connecting Queen Mothers across northern Ghana, enabling them to coordinate their activities, exchange experiences and strengthen their collective voice. At the national level, KAS also supported the development of the National Queen Mothers Platform, bringing together Queen Mothers from across the country and providing a lasting framework for cooperation, representation and joint advocacy. Both initiatives have contributed to strengthening women's leadership within traditional governance, with the networks continuing to operate today.

Building on these structures, KAS has supported Queen Mothers in their roles as community leaders, mediators and advocates for social development. Their close relationships with local communities make them particularly effective in addressing issues such as women's participation, social cohesion, community welfare and conflict prevention.

More recently, this cooperation has also extended to political education and efforts to counter misinformation and disinformation, particularly in the context of elections. Through targeted training, Queen Mothers have been equipped to act as trusted multipliers within their communities, sharing reliable information, raising awareness and encouraging informed civic participation.

By strengthening Queen Mothers as leaders, advocates and community educators, KAS Ghana contributes not only to greater recognition of women within traditional governance structures, but also to their broader participation in political and societal development.
