Amid the ongoing political and security crises in Israel, the continuing war in the Gaza Strip, and massive internal societal tensions, Roland Theis – directly elected member of the St. Wendel constituency (Saarland) and former State Secretary in the Saarland Ministry of Justice – visited Israel from August 25 to 27, 2025. His trip took him to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and southern Israel, providing a powerful insight into the security and social-political challenges the country is facing nearly two years after the terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023. The scale of destruction and the deep-rooted trauma were especially palpable during his visit to the Nova Festival site and Kibbutz Kfar Aza, accompanied by a survivor.

Security Developments and Regional Dynamics

In numerous background discussions – including with Knesset members, representatives from academia and media, diplomats, and think-tank experts – it became clear that Israel is engaged in a prolonged conflict that will shape the country for years to come. Besides developments in the Gaza Strip, particular attention was paid to the situation in Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. The threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program is still considered to be very high. Conversations with relatives of hostages also revealed the deep divisions within Israeli society – a factor that is equally vital to the nation’s security. At the same time, Germany’s various diplomatic efforts to secure the release of the approximately 50 hostages still held – including seven German citizens – were highlighted.

German-Israeli Relations

Another key topic was the recent decision by the German government to stop supplying weapons to Israel that could be used in Gaza. While some interlocutors viewed this measure critically, the special significance of Germany as a partner to Israel was consistently emphasized. Particularly in talks with diplomats and business representatives, the importance of close bilateral relations in the current situation became clear – especially 60 years after the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Dialogue and Responsibility

Roland Theis's visit highlighted how profoundly the October 7, 2023 attacks have changed Israel – politically, socially, and in terms of national security. His discussions with political, business, academic, and civil society leaders showed that despite the enormous challenges, dialogue remains a key element for stability and future perspectives in the region.
