This article discusses Jordan’s move to re-engage with the Assad regime, despite international sanctions. After 11 years of war and with the Assad regime still in power, Jordan began adopting a more pragmatic foreign policy towards Syria, driven by its own strategic interests; hoping to shore up its ailing economy and to limit the presence of pro-Iranian militias near its borders. However, the road ahead remains riddled with challenges.

Am Osterwochenende machten in Jordanien Gerüchte über eine gescheiterte Palastrevolte und eine Verhaftungswelle die Runde, die auch international für Aufregung sorgten. Mit Prinz Hamza, einem Halbbruder des Königs, wurde auch ein prominentes Mitglied der Königsfamilie festgesetzt. Hamza wiederum kritisierte in einem Video Korruption und Inkompetenz im Regierungsapparat. Der royale Bruderzwist stellt keine unmittelbare Gefahr für die Stabilität des Landes dar. Er zeigt aber, dass die Unzufriedenheit in der Bevölkerung wächst – und damit auch die Anspannung in der Herrschaftselite.

Jordanien als Partner deutscher Nahostpolitik

Die neue diplomatische Dynamik im Nahen Osten sollte Deutschland gemeinsam mit Jordanien nutzen. Für eine Verstetigung der Partnerschaft bedarf es jedoch demokratischer Fortschritte im Haschemitischen Königreich.

Jordanien kommt als traditionellem Verbündeten des Westens und einem der stabilsten Länder der Region eine Schlüsselrolle im Nahen Osten zu. Deutschland sollte außenpolitisch eng mit Jordanien zusammenarbeiten und damit die Bemühungen um regionalen Dialog unterstützen, die mit der neuen US-Administration wieder an Fahrt gewinnen. Gleichzeitig sollte die jordanische Führung hinsichtlich ihrer demokratischen Reformbemühungen ermutigt und beim Wort genommen werden. Nur wenn diese auch ernsthaft umgesetzt werden, kann sich Jordanien zu einem langfristigen Wertepartner der deutschen Außenpolitik entwickeln. Letztlich braucht auch die deutsche Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, deren Mittel für Jordanien in den letzten Jahren stark erhöht wurden, rechtsstaatliche und partizipative Strukturen vor Ort, um nachhaltig wirken zu können.
